Dwarf Pea Puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus)
The Dwarf Pea Puffer—also known as the Pea Puffer—is one of the smallest and most fascinating freshwater fish in the hobby. Native to slow-moving waters in India, this tiny predator is packed with personality, making it a standout choice for nano aquariums.
Despite their small size (growing to just 2–2.5 cm), Pea Puffers are highly intelligent and curious. They quickly learn to recognise their owner and will actively explore every corner of the tank. Their bright green-yellow bodies, dotted with dark spots, add a unique and vibrant touch to any aquascape.
Key Features
- Size: ~2–2.5 cm
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive / territorial
- Tank Size: Minimum 20L (heavily planted recommended)
- Diet: Carnivorous (snails, bloodworms, brine shrimp)
- Lifespan: 3–5 years
Behaviour & Compatibility
Dwarf Pea Puffers are best kept in species-only setups due to their nippy nature. While small, they can be territorial and may harass tank mates—especially slow-moving or long-finned fish. A well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots helps reduce aggression and allows natural behaviours to shine.
Feeding
These micro-predators thrive on a protein-rich diet. Live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, and small snails are essential for their health. They are excellent natural snail hunters—making them a favourite for aquarists looking to control pest snail populations.
Care Requirements
Pea Puffers prefer stable water conditions with gentle filtration and densely planted environments. Adding driftwood, moss, and aquatic plants not only enhances their habitat but also reduces stress and encourages natural exploration.
Why Choose Pea Puffers for Your Aquarium?
If you’re looking for a truly interactive nano fish with bold personality, the Dwarf Pea Puffer is hard to beat. Their quirky behaviour, striking appearance, and active hunting instincts make them a captivating addition to any freshwater setup.

I received my 3 ‘hover fish’ a couple of weeks ago (very quick delivery to metro Melbourne) and they’re doing really well in my community tank.
They are a little shy and I did worry I had lost at least one .
However , they are doing great cruising around snacking on my generous population of snails . (They don’t seem to be interested in the frozen bloodworms)
No issues with the other fish in my mixed bag tank.
Thanks for your excellent service .
I recently picked up a couple of pea puffers, and I couldn't be happier! These little guys are not only adorable but also packed with personality.
Pea puffers are fascinating to watch, with their curious nature and playful antics. Just a heads up for potential buyers: they do have specific care requirements and can be territorial, so make sure to do your research beforehand. Overall, I highly recommend checking out abquatics for these delightful little fish!
