Freshwater Brown Back Crab (Holthuisana sp.)
The Freshwater Brown Back Crab is a hardy and fascinating freshwater crab native to northern Australia. Known for its active behaviour and unique colouring, this species makes an interesting addition for experienced aquarists looking for something a little different.
Natural Habitat
In the wild, these crabs inhabit inland rivers and billabongs across northern Australia, often burrowing into sandy substrates during the dry season while waiting for seasonal rains.
Size & Lifespan
-
Maximum size: Approximately 6 cm across the carapace
Water Parameters
-
Temperature: 18 °C – 25 °C
-
pH: 6.5 – 7.5
-
General Hardness: 50 – 150 ppm
Clean, well-maintained water is essential. Freshwater crabs do not tolerate ammonia, nitrite, or copper.
Tank Requirements & Compatibility
Freshwater Brown Back Crabs are semi-aggressive and opportunistic feeders. They should be kept with slow-moving fish only and are best housed separately from shrimp, snails, and other small invertebrates, which may be eaten.
Provide plenty of:
-
Hiding spots (rocks, caves, mangrove roots)
-
Secure tank covers (they are excellent escape artists)
-
Adequate cover for both fish and crabs
Amphibious Nature
These crabs are amphibious and require access to land. An “island” or raised structure that allows them to leave the water is essential, as they periodically need access to atmospheric air for proper gill function.
Feeding
A true scavenger, the Freshwater Brown Back Crab readily accepts:
-
Sinking fish pellets or granules
-
Frozen foods
-
General bottom-feeder foods
They are not fussy eaters and will consume most sinking foods.
Colour & Appearance
This species displays a variety of natural colour patterns, typically featuring pale fawn tones with a distinctive chocolate-brown irregular band across the carapace. Some individuals may show tiger-like striping.
Why Choose Freshwater Brown Back Crabs?
-
Hardy and adaptable
-
Active and entertaining to observe
-
Unique native Australian species
Note: Due to their escape ability and predatory nature, these crabs are best suited to secure aquariums and keepers with some experience.
