Green water is an excellent, easy-to-culture food source for fry, providing a nutrient-rich algae that supports the healthy growth of Daphnia, shrimp, and young fish. It consists of free-floating algae (phytoplankton) that turn the water green. While algae naturally develop in aquariums, the amount is often insufficient for feeding newly hatched fry. Supplementing with Green water is an affordable and effective way to boost plant-based nutrition for fry and fish. It is particularly beneficial for herbivorous species that require plant matter for a strong immune system and serves as an excellent food source for Daphnia.
Comes in a fishbag or plastic bottle.
Steps to Set Up Green Water:
1. Fill the Container: Use dechlorinated or aged aquarium water. A larger volume (20-40ltr) works best.
2. Add a Starter Culture: If available, add water from an existing green water culture or an established tank with algae.
3. Provide Light: Place the container in direct sunlight for at least 8–12 hours per day, or use a strong artificial light (5,000–6,500K) on a timer.
4. Add Nutrients: Use a few drops of liquid plant fertilizer or add a small pinch of fish food to decompose and release nutrients for algae growth.
5. Aeration (Optional): A gentle air stone can help prevent stagnation and keep nutrients distributed.
6. Wait and Maintain: In a few days to a week, the water should turn green as algae multiply. Keep topping off evaporated water with dechlorinated water.
